During COVID-19, most clinical affiliates mandated vaccinations for all students attending clinical externships at off-campus sites. This was a clinical affiliate requirement and not a Broward College requirement, and declining the COVID19 vaccination prevented students from completing their program of study. At this time, clinical affiliates do not have mandatory COVID19 vaccination requirements. Clinical affiliates currently mandate the Flu vaccine and could reinstate the COVID19 vaccination requirements at any time and if so, students will be required to have the COVID19 vaccinate in order to attend clinical rotations, allowing them to progress in their program of study.
As a health information professional, you can help patients by ensuring that their medical records are accurate and secure. HIT professionals play a vital role in improving healthcare delivery, reducing medical errors, and enabling the safe sharing of medical information from doctor to patient and doctor to doctor.
The Associate of Science in Health Information Technology program prepares the student for employment in the health information management field, and students are eligible to sit for the national certifying examination to become a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT). The program will also provide the student the eligibility to sit for the AAPC or AHIMA coding credentialing examinations. Responsibilities include coding of diagnoses and procedures; as well as processing, storage, and retrieval of health information in either paper or electronic health records. Areas covered in the course work include, but are not limited to, the confidentiality of protected health information, health information and electronic health records systems, legal aspects, statistical reporting, reimbursement methodology, healthcare informatics, performance improvement, and supervision of daily department activities comprise other functions taught in the program.
The Associate of Science (AS) in Health Information Technology program prepares students for employment in the health information management field by providing them with the knowledge and skills to become certified as Registered Health Information Technicians (RHIT), and AAPC and/or AHIMA coders as well.

HEALTH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM OUTCOMES AND SURVEY
Course Format
Most of the HIT courses offered by Broward College are fully online except for the two required Professional Practice Experience courses (HIM1800 offered in the Summer and HIM2810 offered in the Spring).
All required non-HIT courses are offered in a variety of formats on several campuses.
While this mixed approach provides students with a variety of options to complete their degree, it also requires a great deal of self-direction and time management on the part of the student. While the department will register students for their CORE HIT courses, students are required to consult with their advisor(s) about choosing the general education academic options that work best for them.
Program Length
The HIT program is designed to be completed in five (5) terms for full-time students (not including the 13 credit hours of prerequisites).
The two (2) Fall and Spring semesters are 16 weeks in length, and the one required summer term is only 12 weeks.
HIT Cohort Model
HIT students are organized as cohorts, groups of students who take all of their HIT courses together. People learn better in groups, and cohorts also build community, teach accountability, foster leadership skills, and encourage communication. Students are also divided into First-year and Second-year students.
First-year students will complete the pre-requisite courses to apply, then if selected, will be registered by the department for all CORE HIT courses. Students are required to consult with their advisor(s) about choosing the general education academic options that keep them on track to graduate.
Second-year students are students who are matriculating from Sheridan Technical College OR Atlantic Technical College. Second-year students will need to submit both their official transcripts from Sheridan Technical College OR Atlantic Technical College AND a copy of their Medical Biller/Coder certificate to qualify for admission as second-year students. The department will work with second-year students to create an academic plan toward graduation.
