Higher Level Math (HLM) Test

​The Higher Level Math Test (HLM) is designed for STEM Pathway students wishing to take higher level math courses but who feel they can by-pass lower level courses. Broward College uses ACCUPLACER subtests to place students into higher level math courses above the College Algebra level. Students wishing to take any of the courses listed below must first take the Higher Level Math (HLM) Test. 

  • MAC1114 - Trigonometry
  • MAC1140 - Pre-Calculus Algebra
  • MAC1147 - Pre-Calculus Algebra & Trigonometry
  • MAC2233 - Calculus for Business, Social & Life Sciences
  • MAC2311 - Calculus & Analytical Geometry I
  • MAD2104 - Discrete Mathematics
  • MAS2103 - Linear Algebra
Students wishing to place into any other higher level math course must see Associate Dean of Mathematics at North, Central, or South.  Contact information can be found using the Faculty & Staff Directory and searching for Mathematics and Administrator.

​How Long is the Test?
ACCUPLACER (CLM) is untimed but usually takes an average of 1 hour to complete.​ ​

All fees must be paid prior to testing. 
​Broward College Students:
  • ​First attempt is free
  • All retests are $18.50 per attempt 

Non-Broward College Students:
  • Must complete Request Form
  • All attempts are $18.50 per attempt

​Can I retest?
​Yes. Students can retest according to the following policy:
  • First retest after 24 hours
  • All other retests must wait 30 days between each retest attempt
A retest fee applies for all retest attempts regardless of the age of previous scores.

Common Placement Test Retesting Policy*

Test sections* covered by this policy:

  • Classic - College Level Math
  • **Next Generation - Advanced Algebra Functions
*Any state specific ACCUPLACER subtest sections are not accepted by BC.
**Pending discipline approval and adoption. 
  • Non-Broward College students wishing to take the ACCUPLACER Higher Level Math (HLM) test for another institution must complete a Remote Testing request. Requests must be approved by Broward College AND the students home institution. 
Students may retake the Higher Level Math (HLM) test an unlimited number of times. However, they must adhere to the following retesting timeline:
  • First retest attempt may be taken after 24 hours.
  • All other retests attempts must wait 30 days between each retest attempt. 
This timeline applies to postsecondary students.

Remediation prior to each test attempt is strongly encouraged

Fees
  • There is a $18.50 retest fee for each retest attempt regardless of the score age.
  • Fee must be paid prior to testing. 

Higher Level Math (HLM) attempts from another institution do not count towards attempts at Broward College.

Retesting is required after scores expire.

  • Dual Enrollment (DE) purposes must provide a completed and signed testing referral form* from their high school guidance office prior to each test attempt.
    • *Home Schooled will get a testing referral form from the Campus Admissions Department.
  • College Academy (CA) purposes may only test once per admission period. Retesting is not allowed during the same admission period. 
    • Students may use the CA PERT Ticket, which is provided by CA only once.
  • Algebra 1 EOC purposes must provide a completed and signed testing referral form from their high school guidance office prior to each test attempt.
  • Private Middle School Students Transitioning to Public High Schools
    • The test can only be taken one time—no retests

Per state rule 6A-10.0315, PERT test scores are valid for two (2) years.

Testing Accommodations
Students with documented testing accommodations must present them to the Office of Accessibility Resources prior to the desired test date. The Testing Center will work with the Office of Accessibility Resources to provide approved testing accommodations. 

Instructions for requesting testing accommodations:

  1. Student presents documentation to Accessibility Resources department.
  2. Accessibility Resources department intakes documentation.
  3. Accommodations are determined.
  4. Accessibility Resources department informs Testing Center about candidate's accommodations.
  5. Candidate contacts Testing Center to schedule the test with accommodations.
  6. Testing Center plans for accommodated testing needs.
  7. Candidate tests.
Test Preparation Resources

Remote Placement Testing

Students needing to take a common placement test, who live outside of the South Florida area, have the option to request remote placement testing accommodations. Students must follow these steps:

  • Students must have a BC ID # prior to making the requesting.
  • All requests must be approved by the Institutional Test Administrator (ITA) (mwebb@broward.edu) or designee prior to taking the test.
  • Requests must be received at least 10 business days prior to the preferred test date.
  • Student must locate a proctor in your geographic area at a postsecondary test center or for those serving in the military or foreign services, a military /government educational facility.
  • If no proctor is available, virtual proctoring may be an option. 
  • Students are responsible for all remote related proctoring fees as well as any BC testing fees which include virtual proctoring fees.
