TABE

Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE)

The TABE test is used as the assessment to meet the Basic Skills Requirement for placement for Postsecondary Adult Vocational (PSAV) and Applied Technology Diploma (ATD) Students per Florida State Board of Education Administrative Rules, Chapter 6A-10.040. TABE is also used by various academic programs at the College such as Nursing. The TABE test is aligned to the National College and Career Readiness Standards for the three core subject areas: Reading, Mathematics, and Language. The current version of the TABE is 11 & 12. Effective Thursday, November 8, 2018 Broward College Testing Centers only administer the TABE 11 & 12. The previous version of the TABE, 9 & 10, is no longer available. Broward College administers the TABE 11 & 12 Level A for all PSAV, ATD, and academic programs.

Effective January 3, 2019 the TABE Reading is no longer required for remediation for the Nursing program. Use of the TABE Reading is optional, but recommended, for Nursing students.

 TABE Remediation Process

Per 6A-10.040, students who do not meet the required minimum level of basic skills on the TABE are required to seek remediation in the Academic Success Center (ASC) prior to retesting on the TABE. Students who choose not to remediate in the ASC must wait the entire minimum waiting period listed above. The process for TABE Remediation in the ASC is as follows:

Effective January 3, 2019 the TABE Reading is no longer required for remediation for the Nursing program. Use of the TABE Reading is optional for Nursing students who have stopped out of the program.
  1. If the student is unsuccessful at the TABE, the Testing Center will provide the student with a copy of their TABE score report and a slip indicating if they passed or failed. They will also provide the student with information about TABE Remediation options and direct the student to visit the ASC.
  2. The student will report to the ASC to meet with the TABE Remediation Lead to receive instructions on the remediation process and available resources.
  3. The student will be given 30-days for the first reattempt to complete the in-lab remediation process. If not successful, subsequent attempts will have a 90-day waiting period.
  4. Once the student has completed the remediation process, the ASC representative will administer a practice TABE assessment. If the student does not pass, additional resources will be provided until he or she can pass the practice exam. If the student passes, the ASC representative will email the Testing representatives to confirm the student's completion of the remediation process and his or her readiness to retake the TABE.
  5. The student then goes to the Testing Center on their campus to retake the TABE unless special accommodations are requested. Once completed, the Testing representative will email a PDF copy of the students' scores to the ASC TABE Remediation Leads.
  6. If the student does not successfully achieve the required TABE score, he or she will have to repeat steps 1 through 5.
