Broward College Celebrates GradSHOEation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Broward College Celebrates GradSHOEation™ as part of its Commencement Ceremony
Tradition allows students to give back to their community through shoe drive

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (Dec. 10, 2014) – Once again, GradSHOEation™ will kick off Broward College’s 82nd commencement ceremony in style. Students will be showing off their fanciest footwear on Thursday, Dec. 18, at 2 p.m. at the BB&T Center, 1 Panther Parkway, Sunrise. The pre-ceremony celebration, which was initiated in May 2013, was created after administrators noticed students were focused on their shoes in order to stand out in a sea of identical graduation gowns.

“Shoes have become a major focal point at commencement, and we thought this event would be a great way to engage with our students and also celebrate this milestone in their lives in a really unique way,” said Daniela Circonciso, Broward College’s digital media manager.

From sky-high stilettos to imaginative DIY creations, the footwear styles of graduates have emerged as a full-fledged backstage fashion and social media event, complete with a step-and-repeat and a photographer to document all of the different styles.

The event is accompanied by a shoe drive, allowing the Fall 2014 graduating class to leave their old shoes behind before putting on new ones. Through a partnership with In Jacob’s Shoes, a local organization that provides new and gently used shoes, school supplies, athletic shoes and equipment to economically disadvantaged youth, graduates have the opportunity to give back to the community one last time with a shoe donation before they leave Broward College.
