Broward College Gives Back to the Community with MLK Day of Service Awards

MLK Day of Service honors Martin Luther King, Jr. with various volunteer opportunities on January 16

Fort Lauderdale, FL (December 19, 2016) – Through funding from the Florida Legislature, Broward College, in partnership with the MLK Day of Service Advisory Board, has allocated funds to 36 different community organizations to develop and complete service projects from January 9 through January 16, 2017 for MLK Day of Service. MLK Day of Service encourages the public to take part in a day of volunteerism to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Each selected organization was eligible to receive awards up to $3,500 in funding to directly support their proposed service projects. The 2017 service projects will focus on support for veterans, neighborhood improvement projects, health promotion, environmental initiatives, education, economic opportunity, and more. The public is now invited to participate in one of these volunteer projects by registering on the Broward College website.

“Broward College is thrilled to continue its tradition of giving back to the community through MLK Day of Service,” said Broward College President J. David Armstrong, Jr. “It is our goal to encourage year-round volunteerism and service within our community, and these service projects offer an excellent outlet for our faculty, staff and students, and members of the community to get involved.”

Since 2015, the Broward College MLK Day of Service has funded 96 service projects and logged more than 18,700 volunteer hours in Broward County. For more information on this year’s projects, please visit Broward College website.
