Broward College Student Honored as a 2018 DREAM Scholar

First-generation Haitian-American student is the first in her family to graduate high school and attend college

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (January 9, 2018) – Broward College is proud to announce that Mardwina Lasseur, a health sciences student who wishes to become a Psychiatric Mental-Health Nurse Practitioner, was selected as a 2018 DREAM Scholar inviting her to attend the experiential learning program in Nashville, Tennessee from February 20-23, 2018.

Only six students, out of 220 Achieving the Dream Institutions located in 39 states, are selected through a competitive application process to attend the prestigious DREAM Student Engagement Program.

A first-generation Haitian-American, and the first in her family to graduate high school and attend college, Lasseur, 19, who lives in Miramar, says she gained strength and inspiration through her challenges.

"We are extremely proud to have Mardwina represent Broward College on a national platform as she gains invaluable insight and learn first-hand from successful industry experts," said Broward College President J. David Armstrong, Jr. "Broward College is full of students, like Mardwina, who excel in high-demand fields. We hope her story can inspire more students to pursue nursing and lessen the shortage across the nation."

The educational conference is designed to enhance key leadership, critical thinking and networking skills and allows students to significantly engage with thought-leaders from across the country.

"Out of all the DREAM 2018 conference themes, I am most interested in learning more about Equity and Policies & Practices and how the combination of these two themes can increase the rate of student success in colleges," said Lasseur.
