Davie, FL (August 22, 2016) – Health science students at Broward College are now able to receive an invaluable, immersive experience aboard the ALS (Advanced Life Support) and EMS (Emergency Medical Services) simulation training ambulance. The unit was generously gifted by Memorial Healthcare System. The College and the Healthcare System have a partnership that spans 25 years.
Aurelio Fernandez, III, president and CEO of Memorial Healthcare System, and colleagues toured the vehicle and all it has to offer. The unit is a 2015 Dodge 5500 Hemi gas engine and meets all the state requirements for an ALS ambulance. Features include four cameras, two speakers, and a TV screen on the driver’s side to allow for firsthand assessment, review and analysis of “patient” care during and after the simulated scenario. On the ambulance, the patient is represented by SimMan 3G, a wireless high-fidelity mannequin which responds in real time to students’ actions.
Participants also can experience caring for a subject while riding in the back of the vehicle when in motion, and a retractable awning provide much-needed shade during outdoor teaching moments and simulation debriefing sessions. The ambulance, when driven by certified instructors, can travel anywhere on campus.
The donation of the ambulance was celebrated during the Memorial Healthcare System Needs Forum, which was hosted at the Health Sciences Simulation Center on the A. Hugh Adams Central Campus in Davie, Fla. and included members of Broward College leadership. Images courtesy of Broward College
