Broward College to Award $120,000 to Community Organizations Participating in 2020 MLK Day of Service

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (Sept. 9, 2019)Applications are now open for community organizations to receive funding for the 2020 MLK Day of Service, an initiative that will see $120,000 allocated to a variety of service projects throughout South Florida.

Through funding from the Florida Legislature, Broward College, in partnership with the MLK Day of Service Advisory Board offers grant funding to service projects that encourage the public to take part in a day of volunteerism to honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The grant will fund projects that meet an identified community need, engage volunteers in service, recruit a diverse cross-section of volunteers, support the legacy of Dr. King, and provide opportunities for sustained service and ongoing community involvement.

Since 2015, the Broward College MLK Day of Service has funded more than 185 projects across Broward County. The awards are intended to encourage service projects that address education, health, clean energy and environmental stewardship, economic opportunity, basic needs, disaster preparedness, veterans and military families' issues, public safety or neighborhood projects.

Interested organizations are invited to outline how their proposed projects will enhance or impact Broward County. Applications are available through the Broward College MLK Day of Service website. Selected organizations will be eligible to receive awards up to $5,000 to directly support their proposed service projects. Applications are open from September 16 to October 11.

Last year, more than 3,700 volunteers registered for projects and logged 18,592 hours of service.
