The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will host its naturalization and refugee awards ceremonies as part of a larger initiative to honor those who were forced to flee their homes under threat of persecution, conflict and violence. The League of American Pen Women Fort Lauderdale chapter presents “A Mother’s Love.” Works on display include photography, watercolor, acrylics, oils mixed media and sculpture. Bartosz Beda, Faraz Falahi, and Serena Stevens come from disparate backgrounds, but their work shares a unique view of the world. The images on display as part of “Beneath the Surface” capture glimpses of figures in their environments through loose and textured painted surfaces. Bold Beauty Project Opening Reception

The Bold Beauty Project is a world-renowned visual arts exhibition that features women with varying disabilities as seen through the lenses of award-winning photographers. Featuring one of Broward College’s own student advisors, Debbie Brecker, the collection is also meant to create transformative experiences for participants and viewers while expanding the concept of what it means to be beautiful. Opening reception will include a lecture and discussion with Shelly Baer, Bold Beauty Project founder. Free and open to the public for viewing through August 31. Broward College Receives $3.9 Million in U.S. Department of Education Grants for Programs to Assist High-Poverty, Low-Performing Local High Schools

Broward College is the recipient of three U.S. Department of Education TRIO Upward Bound grants totaling $3.9 million over five years. The money will help support activities and provide financial incentives for 60 students each year to participate in enrichment programs at three high poverty, low performing high schools. The programs begin at Deerfield Beach, McArthur and South Broward during the 2017-2018 academic year.
