What is Credit Skimming and ATM Fraud?
Credit skimming and ATM fraud are types of financial scams where criminals use devices to capture your credit or debit card information, PIN numbers, and other sensitive data. These devices can be attached to ATMs, gas pumps, or other card readers, making it difficult to detect.
Wiggle the Credit Card Reader: Before inserting your card, wiggle the credit card reader to check if it’s loose or attached to a skimmer. Legitimate card readers shouldn’t have any give.
Carefully Inspect Card Readers: Check for any signs of tampering, such as glue, tape, or scratches. Look for differences in color, size, or wear on the keys on the number pad.
Ask a Store or Bank Owner to Inspect the Card Reader: If you suspect something is wrong, ask the merchant or bank to inspect the device. They have a vested interest in protecting your information and can check for any skimmers.
Shield Your PIN: When typing in your PIN, cover the keypad with your free hand to prevent cameras or bystanders from seeing your PIN.
Use an ATM Inside a Building: Avoid using outdoor ATMs, especially those located in isolated areas. Instead, use ATMs inside banks or other secure locations.
Monitor Your Accounts: Regularly check your account statements and notify your bank immediately if you notice any suspicious transactions.
Use a Credit Card with Chip Technology: Credit cards with chip technology are more secure than those with magnetic stripes.
Avoid Using Debit Cards: Debit cards are more vulnerable to fraud than credit cards. If possible, use a credit card instead.
Use a Mobile Payment Method: Consider using mobile payment methods like Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay, which use tokenization to protect your card information.
Stay Informed: Stay up-to-date with the latest scams and fraud techniques to stay one step ahead of criminals.
Additional Tips:
Be cautious when using ATMs in tourist areas or locations with high foot traffic.
Avoid using ATMs that look old, outdated or located in an isolated area.
Don’t share your PIN or card information with anyone.
Keep your card information and PIN secure by storing them in a safe place.
By following these tips, you can significantly reduce your risk of falling victim to credit skimming and ATM fraud. Remember to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity to your bank or authorities immediately.
