Professor of the Year - 04/26/2016
Greetings Esteemed Colleagues:
It is with great pride and admiration that I present to you our North Campus 2015-2016 Professor of the Year and Adjunct Professor of the Year awards.
North Campus Professor of the Year – Dr. Russell L. Betts, Associate Professor of Chemistry
Dr. Betts joined the Broward College faculty in 2011. He teaches General and Organic Chemistry as well as Chemistry for the Health Sciences. Dr. Betts creates a highly active learning environment where dazzling chemistry experiments mark the first day of class and where students ‘become atoms’ to act out various chemical reactions. Dr. Betts has created an extensive series of D2L homework assignments that eliminate the need for students to purchase commercial homework tools, and has co-authored a Chemistry for Health Sciences laboratory manual that better intertwines the lab experience with the class lectures. Students have expressed their gratitude for how well Dr. Betts has leveraged the resources at the Academic Success Center with the creation of his, now famous, "black binder" of 100 chemistry problems with written answers. As a compliment to the written problems, Dr. Betts has filmed videos of himself explaining the answers to those problems which are accessible via a QR code in the binder. Dr. Betts is also a Broward College QEP Scholar and most recently participated as a co-researcher and judge for the 2016 Life Sciences South Florida Symposium held on North Campus.
North Campus Adjunct Professor of the Year – Ms. Adriana Barzellotti, Adjunct Professor of Psychology
Professor Barzellotti joined the BC adjunct faculty in 2011. She teaches General Psychology as well as Child Development and Lifespan Development. Professor Barzellotti uses a wide range of pedagogical approaches in her classroom including didactic discussion, journal writing, and a variety of collaborative exercises. Students have noted her remarkable ability to connect course concepts to real world examples and their deeper understanding and practice of critical thinking skills as a result of her work in class.
North Campus Adjunct Professor of the Year – Ms. Winsome Denise Mundy, Adjunct Professor of Mathematics
Professor Mundy joined the BC adjunct faculty in 2014. She teaches Intermediate and College Algebra as well as Statistics. Professor Mundy infuses the passion she has for mathematics and statistics into her classes by modeling the “excited mathematician” with a mission for students to learn that math is everywhere and is fundamental to understanding the world around them. Students have noted that Professor Mundy instills self-confidence while conveying mathematical concepts. She writes that her teaching philosophy is guided by the “belief that there is an epic mathematician within each of my students and I try to bring the mathematician out of hiding.”
Please join me in congratulating Dr. Russell Betts, Professor Adriana Barzellotti and Professor Winsome Mundy on their well-deserved honor and recognition for outstanding work with our students.
Also, many thanks to the North Campus Professor of the Year Committee Members who sifted through many impressive nominations and worked through this process – Dr. David Perdian, Professor Oyinka Coakley, Professor Mary Jean Woika, student representative Derrian Daron, and student representative Timoy Graham . Importantly, I sincerely congratulate all of the amazing Professor of the Year nominees as their work clearly demonstrates a high level of commitment to student success. Our students are certainly in good hands.
