Panama Canal International Trade and Logistics - Supply Chain
Program
With this faculty-led study abroad program students will not only have the opportunity to explore one of the world's largest engineering marvels, but they will also get to explore several warehouses, cargo operations, and logistical centers all positioned around moving cargo through the Panama Canal. Led by two Broward College professors who are experts in the field of supply chain management, this program gives students the chance to see and experience how transnational companies operate using global supply chains. Students will talk with managers and representatives who are in the field and develop the processes that move products around the world.
Panama Canal
The Panama Canal is an engineering marvel that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans over a 50-mile artificial waterway. Imagine massive ships navigating through this man-made waterway, passing through intricate locks that raise and lower vessels as they journey between continents. Completed in 1914, the canal is an astonishing feat that shortened maritime routes by thousands of miles. The Canal moves roughly $270 billion worth of cargo annually. It is the trade route taken by 40% of all U.S. container traffic alone and handles about 5% of all global maritime trade. It would not be embellishing to say that the Panama Canal is one of THE most important waterways in terms of geopolitics and global commerce.
