Frequently Asked Questions

TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) is a federal grant program that promotes academic and personal success for first-generation, under-resourced Broward College students. SSS provides tutoring, advising, grant aid, and a variety of other services to increase postsecondary retention and completion.

To be eligible to join TRIO Student Support Services, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  • Enrollment: Must be enrolled at Broward College. Also, students must have taken English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses previously or are currently taking EAP courses.
  • Need: Must meet at least one of the following criteria:
    • First-generation college student
    • Low-income individual
    • Individuals with a documented disability

The benefits of joining TRIO Student Support Services includes having a family that supports you academically and personally, and access to a personal success coach with access to resources. Other benefits are increased chances of graduating, professional development, and a chance to earn more financial aid funding.

A first-generation college student is a student with parents that have not completed a 4-year college/university degree. (Bachelor's degree)

TRIO Student Support Services ESL provides free services to students including Peer Mentoring, Academic Coaching, Financial Aid & Financial Literacy, and Specialized English/EAP Tutoring.

Students who are accepted and join TRIO Student Support Services ESL are required to maintain an "Active Participant" status in the program by completing:

  • 3 Coaching Sessions
  • 2 Workshops
  • 1 Cultural Activity

Students must also remain enrolled in classes at Broward College until graduation.
