The Medical Technology Associate of Science degree program was developed specifically to enable Medical Laboratory Technician Certificate/Advanced Technology Diploma (ATD) graduates to continue their education and qualify for higher-level positions in the clinical laboratory field or higher degrees such as a Bachelor's degree. AS program graduates will be able to work with less direct supervision and perform more difficult procedures than would be expected of an ATD graduate. They will be eligible to take state and national certifying exams that require education above the ATD level.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, roughly half of people working as technicians or technologists work in hospital settings, and the other half work for private medical offices or other labs. Technicians and Technologists analyze fluid and cell samples, log the results, and disseminate the information to doctors, surgeons, and nurses. Personnel can specialize (e.g. blood banks) or handle a range of tests, depending on the needs of the facility.
The curriculum will provide the students with a foundational understanding of science, critical thinking skills, experiential learning, ethics, and specific technical knowledge and skills required to work in the laboratory or the field.
Information about careers in Medical Laboratory Technology can be found at the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
