2024-25 FAFSA Changes

Big changes are coming to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application for the 2024-2025 aid year!

How To Receive Financial Aid

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is free to file and is available to complete every year on October 1st.

Important things to know:

  • Use federal school code 001500 (111 East Las Olas Blvd, Ft Lauderdale, FL 33301).
  • You can choose the option to have your tax information automatically imported into your FAFSA. This will save you time. Be sure to select the Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) option when filing your FAFSA.

After completing your FAFSA, you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) from the U.S. Department of Education summarizing all of the information you provided in the online application. Your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) will be included in the SAR.  In determining your eligibility, the College calculates your estimated Cost of Attendance (COA). Your EFC is subtracted from your COA to determine your eligibility for need-based aid. Please review your SAR for accuracy and make any necessary corrections online.

Before your financial aid can be processed, students must fulfill all outstanding requirements. These requirements are displayed as red flags on your myBC account and should be resolved as soon as possible. Red flags mean that your financial aid will not be processed until all documents are received by the Financial Aid office.

Log in to myBC and check the Financial Aid 'Application Status' page to review your red flags and how to resolve them. The 'Document Details' button will provide an explanation of what you are required to do in each case.

Once your financial aid is processed, you will be able to see your awards on your myBC account under the 'Awards' page. Please note that awards can be adjusted based on changes in your enrollment.

Student aid is based on hours of enrollment: 1 to 5 credits (less than half time), 6 to 8 credits (half time), 9 to 11 credits (three-quarter time), or 12 credits or more (full-time). You should only enroll in classes necessary to complete your degree and only enroll in the number of credits that you can successfully complete for the term. If you are uncertain about your desired major or classes, you should see a Broward College academic advisor. Failure to follow these guidelines could result in a loss of eligibility.

Please Note:  Financial Aid is awarded each semester based on your enrollment status and is adjusted based on changes you make to your schedule before and after the term begins. For example, if you are awarded 12 credits then reduce your enrollment to 6 credits, your aid award changes. Once you are certain about the classes you want to take, you should enroll in all classes and sessions that you plan to attend, even session 3 and 4 classes that start later in the term. The PELL Grant calculator can be used to determine your award based on your enrollment.

If you decide that you are no longer interested in attending a particular class or for a particular semester, you are responsible for dropping the class(es). Do not rely on being dropped automatically for non-payment or the instructor to drop you from your classes.

Once all of your documents have been submitted and your file has been processed, log in to myBC and review your awards on the 'Awards' page. Please note that awards can be adjusted based on enrollment. Refund information can be found on this page as well.

The campus bookstores are owned and operated by Barnes & Noble. To be successful, it is important to plan to have your textbooks and materials by the first day of class. You may visit your campus’s bookstore to purchase your materials or use Barnes & Noble's online ordering platform.

If you have financial aid in excess of your tuition and fees after you have been awarded, you will be provided $60 per credit hour to use at the bookstore. Course registration is required before you can use financial aid at the bookstore and students who would like to use Federal Financial Aid must submit authorization prior to visiting the campus bookstore.

To submit the bookstore authorization, please log in to your myBC account and locate my financial tab. Select financial authorization and answer the questions. Please allow 3-4 hours after course registration or after completing the bookstore authorization before using your Financial Aid funds to purchase your coursework materials.

Broward College has partnered with Barnes & Noble to offer the First Day Access Textbook Saving Program providing digital course materials included as an additional course charge for a particular course or program. If you have financial aid in excess of your tuition, fees, and other Bookstore purchases, your charges will be covered. If you do not have enough financial aid, you will receive a bill and will need to pay online through your myBC account. Please view First Day for more information about the program.

For information and questions on course materials, please visit the BC Bookstore.

  • Students must be admitted to an eligible degree or certificate program of study in order to receive financial aid.
  • Students must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards.
  • Enrollment can affect aid amounts, and only classes that are recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as being required for degree completion will be used to calculate eligibility for Title IV funds.
