During COVID-19, most clinical affiliates mandated vaccinations for all students attending clinical externships at off-campus sites. This was a clinical affiliate requirement and not a Broward College requirement, and declining the COVID19 vaccination prevented students from completing their program of study. At this time, clinical affiliates do not have mandatory COVID19 vaccination requirements. Clinical affiliates currently mandate the Flu vaccine and could reinstate the COVID19 vaccination requirements at any time and if so, students will be required to have the COVID19 vaccinate in order to attend clinical rotations, allowing them to progress in their program of study.
The Radiation Therapy Program at Broward College is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). The program offers you all of the required knowledge to be an entry-level radiation therapist, which includes an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in our campus labs prior to beginning your clinical education. The clinical site experience will offer you the opportunity to enhance your clinical skills while treating cancer patients on a daily basis.
When you apply and are accepted into the Radiation Therapy program at Broward College, you will develop the skills to provide appropriate patient care, apply problem-solving techniques, use critical thinking skills, maintain patient records, practice and adhere to patient privacy, and most importantly practice radiation safety. Lastly, you will be able to identify and administer treatment protocols, perform tumor localization through the use of diagnostic radiographs and computed tomography (CT), and calculate dosimetry formulas used to plan patient radiation doses.
Students considering a career in Radiation Therapy are encouraged to attend an Information Session and make an appointment with a Health Science Academic Advisor located on North Campus in Coconut Creek, Florida.
It is recommended that all students complete as much general education, if not, all general education, to obtain as many points as possible by the close of the application period.
Prior to admission, each student is required to successfully complete a drug screening. Please be advised that certain over-the-counter supplements and alternative medicinal products, including but not limited to CBD, THC, Cannabinoid, and Cannabinoid Oil may trigger a positive result, and consequently, the student will not be able to be admitted to the Health Science program. A second drug-tested sample is not allowed per Broward College Admissions Procedure A6Hx2-5.01.

Application Period: January to March
Admission Selection Criteria: Selection is based on the candidate having the highest points earned in completion of General Education Courses with a grade of "C" or above. Points will be awarded for completion of the general education courses below:
The maximum number of general education points that can be awarded is 110.
The maximum number of points that can be awarded overall is 117 (Total of General Education, Military, and HSC 1531 points).
Courses in progress after the application deadline will not be awarded points.
Points for Grade Achieved in General Education Courses listed above:
A = 8 points
B = 4 points
C = 1 point
Below C = No points
Military Service: 5 points will be awarded to US Armed Forces active duty and honorably discharged veterans.
In the event of a point tie, students who have completed HSC1531 (Medical Terminology) with a grade of "C" or better, will be awarded the following points:

Overall GPA will be used to rank students in the event of an equivalent point tie when all possible points are awarded.
*All applications will be reviewed based on published admissions selection criteria and not in the order in which they were received by the Health Science Admissions office.
***The Admissions Department will notify all applicants of acceptance or denial into the program 30 business days after the close of the application period through their Broward College email.
*Due to enrollment limitations, meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. If you are not offered admission, you will need to reapply during the next appropriate application acceptance period.
The Florida Department of Education has discontinued the Radiation Therapy 6228 Technical Certificate. ARRT licensed professionals can seek Radiation Therapy education and licensure through the Associate of Science degree program.
A requirement of the Radiation Therapy 2159 A.S. Degree is CHM1032 and the Civic Literacy AMH2020 or POS2041.
These courses must be completed in addition to the Radiation Therapy courses to satisfy graduation requirements.

Radiation therapists deliver prescribed doses of radiation to patients for therapeutic purposes. We train you on the proper procedures with a mix of on-campus courses and clinical education in area hospitals.
All didactic (lecture) and laboratory courses are taught in building 41 on the North Campus in Coconut Creek, Florida. Clinical courses are located in hospitals and Cancer Centers throughout Broward, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach, and Martin Counties. You may have to drive up to one hour from their home to attend clinical courses. You will rotate through three to four different hospitals over the length of the program.
Prerequisite and general education courses (i.e., courses that do not begin with a "RAT" prefix) may be taken at any Broward College campus or online if available.
Job prospects for radiation therapists are projected to increase faster than average over the next decade, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Graduates who successfully complete the program are awarded an Associate of Science (A.S.) degree in Radiation Therapy. You would then be eligible to take the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination. If you successfully pass your examination, you will be able to use the title Registered Technologist and its abbreviation R.T. (T). You would also be eligible to become licensed in Florida through the Department of Health, Bureau of Radiation Control.
Radiation therapists deliver prescribed doses of ionizing radiation to cancer patients for therapeutic purposes. You will be working alongside radiation oncologists, medical physicists, dosimetrists, and fellow radiation therapists. In addition, you will interact with oncology nurses, social workers, dieticians, and various other hospital personnel.

Curriculum Guide and the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) Clinical Competency Requirements.
The program offers a well-structured, competency-based curriculum offered in a sequence to allow students to build on fundamental knowledge in technical and procedural topics. The curriculum was developed and is periodically revised using the ASRT Curriculum Guide and the ARRT Radiation Therapy Didactic and Clinical Competency Requirements. Courses are structured so that students acquire cognitive skills in the didactic portion of the program prior to application in the laboratory and clinical settings.
The program provides a competency-based approach to the development of a student's skills and knowledge of the radiation therapy profession. Didactic instruction is provided followed by laboratory and clinical application. Laboratory and clinical applications involve the exploration of technical and procedural skills. Laboratory assessment involves problem-solving, simulation of procedures, critical thinking, and radiographic image critique.

The Radiation Therapist is an accepted and valued member of the health care team who practices in a multicultural medical environment. The development of competent and compassionate Radiation Therapists requires a quality education founded on a well-rounded professional curriculum that includes cognitive, affective, and psychomotor learning outcomes that can be measured by an observable change in behavior. The learning process should provide opportunities for evaluation based on didactic and clinical course objectives as well as, opportunities for ongoing student self-evaluation. In the development of radiation therapy instruction, the varied nature of the student dictates that a multitude of learning styles will be present. We recognize that there will be such differences among learners.

The program at Broward College follows the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) Radiation Therapy Curriculum. The ASRT establishes standards of practice for the profession. The ASRT writes and maintains the curriculum guideline used by educational programs throughout the United States. The program curriculum at Broward College adheres to all guidelines set forth by the ASRT. Radiation Therapy students are strongly encouraged to become members of the ASRT.
The program at Broward College follows the content specifications for certification provided by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). The ARRT is the provider for the national licensing exam. The program at Broward College follows all competency guidelines for clinical and didactic training as set forth by the ARRT. Radiation therapy program graduates may not practice until they have passed the national registry exam by a score of at least 75%.
