The purpose of Placement Testing is to determine accurate course placement based on a student's skills, abilities, and language needs in reading, writing, and mathematics. There are different kinds of placement tests for different purposes. Each type has specific testing criteria. Placement tests are Not Pass or Fail but are instead designed to place a student into the most appropriate course that matches their current skill level in that area.
The Broward College ACCUPLACER ESL (LOEP) is a multiple-choice format (except for WritePlacer ESL essay). Students taking this test are placed into classes according to their skill level. There's no time limit (except for WritePlacer ESL essay). Questions are presented based on individual's skill level. The response to each question drives the difficulty level of the next question. It's important to give each question as much thought as possible before selecting an answer. The ESL Reading Skills, ESL Language Use, ESL Listening, and NG QAS (Qualitative, Reasoning, and Statistics) math subtests of the ACCUPLACER ESL (LOEP) are adaptive. This means that the questions are chosen for you on the basis of your answers to previous questions. This technique selects just the right questions for your ability level. Because the test works this way, you must answer every question in the order it is given. You can change your answer to a particular question before moving on to the next question, but you cannot leave a question out or come back to it later to change your answer. If you do not know the answer to a question, try to eliminate one or more of the choices. Then pick from the remaining choices.
Visit the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Students section on the Placement Method Tables and Flowcharts webpage for more information.

Note: BC administers an ACCUPLACER ESL (LOEP) test sequence specifically designed for BC students. It may differ from the ACCUPLACER ESL version required by another institution. Check with your institution about the specific ACCUPLACER ESL (LOEP) test sequence they require. BC will only administer an ACCUPLACER ESL for a student from another institution if that institution issues an ACCUPLACER voucher through the Remote Network. |

The IEPT (Interim EAP Placement Test) was an essay delivered through D2L which was scored by EAP faculty and was place students into the same level for all 3 content areas of EAP. It was used during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is not currently available to be taken.
The ACCUPLACER Next Generation (NG) is a state approved common placement test. The purpose of the ACCUPLACER NG is to determine accurate course placement based on the student's skills and abilities. ACCUPLACER NG is an integrated system of computer-adaptive assessments designed to evaluate students’ skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. This means that the questions are chosen for you on the basis of your answers to previous questions. This technique selects just the right questions for your ability level. Because the test works this way, you must answer every question in the order it is given. Students can *retest according to the following policy:
*Retest may include all subtest areas (reading, writing, math, and higher level math), any combination of subtests, or an individual subtest based on a student's need to take a subtest for a higher score or subtests with expired scores. A retest fee applies for all retest attempts regardless of the age of previous scores. EAP students are eligible to retest on a common placement test according to the policy above. Retesting fee applies to all retest attempts. The first attempt on a common placement test is free to BC students. Local common placement tests are ACCUPLACER NG, PERT, ACCUPLACER CPT, and ACCUPLACER ESL (LOEP). Common placement for students taking the ACCUPLACER ESL (LOEP) uses the ESL Listening, ESL Reading Skills, ESL Language Use, and WritePlacer ESL to measure the students "Reading and Writing" placement. |

The Postsecondary Education Readiness Test (PERT) is Florida's customized common placement test. The purpose of the PERT is to determine accurate course placement based on the student's skills and abilities. The PERT is aligned with the Postsecondary Readiness Competencies identified by Florida faculty as necessary for success in entry-level college credit coursework. The PERT assesses readiness for college-level coursework in English and mathematics. The PERT is adaptive. This means that the questions are chosen for you on the basis of your answers to previous questions. This technique selects just the right questions for your ability level. Because the test works this way, you must answer every question in the order it is given.
